Stories about Mike Hanopol

Although rock legend Mike Hanopol is already 79 years old, he continues to perform on stage and wow the audience. He is the only surviving member of the Juan Dela Cruz Band, formed in 1970 and is credited as being the pioneer of Pinoy rock and OPM (Original Pilipino Music).
Mike Hanopol's timeless hits include "Laki sa Layaw Jeproks", "No Touch", "Balong Malalim", "Awiting Pilipino", "Katawan", "Mr. Kenkoy", "Titser's enemy no. 1", "Tulungan Natin", "Sa bayan ni Juan", "Kayabangan".

He was a member of Speed, Glue & Shinki

This psychedelic rock group released 3 albums from 1970-1972 for Warner Bros . They opened for Pink Floyd in Japan in 1971. Mike and band mate Pepe Smith later formed the Juan Dela Cruz Band.

The songwriter and voice behind Hagibis

As the the chief songwriter, musical architect, and studio guide for Hagibis, he crafted the melodies, lyrics, and vocal arrangements that defined their iconic macho pop style. Though Hagibis performed as the public faces of the group, the creative foundation came from Mike’s vision and voice during the recording and production process. His work behind the scenes is a major reason their hits became unforgettable classics in Filipino music history.

While living and recording albums in the US in the 1980s, Mike was mentored by 10-time Grammy award winner George Benson, the soul jass guitarist, and by 15-time Grammy nominee Joe Satriani in New York, who is the best selling intrumental guitarist of all time

Lived in Israel and a follower of Judaism

Mike Hanopol spent many years living in Israel, where he immersed himself in Jewish teachings and community life. During his time there, he studied Hebrew, deepened his spiritual practice, and embraced Judaism as a guiding part of his identity. The experience influenced both his personal journey and his music, shaping a more reflective and grounded chapter in his life.

Mike briefly worked for Julio Iglesias in Miami

In the early 1980's Mike Hanopol once worked as Julio Iglesias’ driver in Miami, but when Greggy Araneta, Julio’s brother-in-law, visited and recognized Mike, he told Julio, “Your driver is more famous than you in the Philippines!” The next day, in good humor, Julio turned the tables and drove for Mike.
